Meteorological Center Field Trip Reflection

The Chinese floods of 1931 and had over 4 million, gruesome casualties. 87 years since, the Kerala floods in India saw just under 500 deaths. The 3,999,500 souls saved from this grim end owe the many meteorological departments set up after such disasters that foresee such hardships for their lives.

On the 18th of November, the CBSE segment of tenth grade paid the antediluvian  Hyderabad Meteorological Center which was set up in the late 18th century a very indoctrinating visit. The much-awaited field trip not only made us aware of the many ways in which weather affects our lives but also presented us with an opportunity to catch our breaths.

After the two-hour bus ride, Mr. Reddy, a representative of the Hyderabad Meteorological Center gave us a tour of the state of the art facility and told us about the 4 ways in which temperature, rainfall, wind speed and direction among others can be measured and predicted: The surface measurements, upper air procedures, satellite imaging, and Radio Detection and Ranging devices.

Fun fact: An enigmatic amount of over 80,000 INR is spent every day by the department to envisage the tragedies that the upper air 50km from the office may face that affect the airplanes departing from Hyderabad. Following this expedition, I can undeniably say that every constituent of the tenth grade knows a lot more about meteorologists and meteorology than they did before and that maybe, a few of us may even consider becoming weathermen!
