We need compassionate leaders, not efficient managers.

The disorienting effects of COVID-19 on our lives, global health, and the economy have transformed the world as we know it. Blistering unemployment, political unrest, and uncertainty about the future have overwhelmed us to the point where often, it only takes a firm invective or disturbing incident to cause a mental breakdown.

Now, more than ever, we need our leaders to be compassionate, rather than managers that are result-driven and coercive. Reports of worsening mental health have come up globally, and now, we need leaders to assuage our anxiety and foster belonging.

🎯🎯🎯

Bill Taylor, writing in the Harvard Business Review says, “The hunger among customers, employees and all of us to engage with companies on more than just dollars-and-cents terms. In a world shaped by the relentless advance of technology, what stands out are acts of compassion and connection that remind us what it means to be human.”

We all go through something sometime or the other, and when we do, we need to remember that we are all doing the best we can then. When we take the time to be empathetic, everyone makes more sense to us.

💡💡💡

As leaders, we must take strides to become more compassionate and give our employees what they need.

1 // We can do this by truly listening to what our employees have to say without fear of being admonished.

2 // Another way is to check our intentions before meeting others. Think, "Is this truly the best way I can support them?"

3 // Additionally, award recognition where recognition is due! Showing gratitude or delivering your approval does you no harm and may profoundly affect your employee.

What do you prefer- the efficient manager or the thoughtful leader? I hope was an intriguing read!
